He shares a variety of techniques broken down into 12 chapters to help you fully learn and understand how to create a wide range of motion for character faces. In this 4-hour workshop, Hector Abraham Torres, a Character Rigger at Sony Pictures Animation, reveals how to create a stylized facial rig suitable for use in production. A great facial rigger will have both technical and artistic skills to achieve smooth and appealing facial expressions for characters, whether they’re being created for film, TV, games, or VR. Others with more experience may have significantly differing opinions than this.Facial rigging is one of the most sought-after talents in the animation industry. I still generally have to do a fair number of corrective blendshapes, but at least this gets the rig functioning pretty fast. Most of my actual professional facial rigging has had to be done very quickly, and I've found using joints the best trade off in quality vs speed of setup. This is especially apparent when dealing with things like blinking or lips curling. For example to make to get more of an arc going from a frown to a smile as opposed to blending straight between them. Also, though you can get just as good results from blendshapes, I personally find it quicker and easier to get nicer non-linear deformations. I found myself often skinning a face to create my blendshapes anyway, so I figure why not give the animator more direct control as well. I like using joints vs blendshapes for a couple of reasons. Then I have more detailed controls underneath those driven joints (or nulls) that the animator can use to tweak the pose. This is how I get general overall face shapes. I still have general facial controls that drive a parent of each one of the joints. Generally when I do a joint driven facial rig, I have a hierarchy of controls.
